Volleyball New Zealand announces Crispin Phelan as new Board Chair

Volleyball New Zealand is pleased to announce the appointment of Crispin Phelan as its new Board Chair. He steps into the role with a strong commitment to governance excellence, genuine community connection, and the continued growth of volleyball across Aotearoa. His appointment reflects Volleyball New Zealand’s focus on strong leadership, clear strategic direction, and values‑led decision-making at every level of the sport.

 

Reflecting on his appointment, Crispin said:

 

“It’s a privilege to step into the role of Board Chair at Volleyball New Zealand. I want to acknowledge the strong foundations laid by the Board, staff, volunteers, officials, and the wider volleyball community across the country.

As Board Chair, I am committed to ensuring Volleyball New Zealand remains aligned to its strategic priorities and values, with community at the heart of everything we do. From grassroots and schools through to clubs, regions, and high performance, our focus is on growing and sustaining participation, supporting clear athlete pathways, and building strong, capable people and organisations. By working collaboratively with our volleyball community, including athletes, coaches, referees, officials, volunteers, partners, and whānau, we can deliver an inclusive, values‑led sport that provides positive experiences and meaningful opportunities for all.”

 

Volleyball New Zealand Acting Managing Director Debbie Hyland welcomed the appointment, highlighting Crispin’s strong alignment with the organisation’s long-term vision.

 

“Crispin brings a thoughtful, strategic approach to governance and a genuine commitment to the communities that make our sport strong. His leadership reflects our organisational values - collaboration, integrity, and creating positive experiences for everyone in volleyball. Our team looks forward to working with Crispin as we continue to grow participation, strengthen pathways, and support our people across Aotearoa. His steady leadership and clear vision will be invaluable as we move into the next chapter for Volleyball New Zealand.”

 

Volleyball New Zealand also acknowledges the contribution of outgoing Chair Sila Auva’a, whose leadership and service have played a key role in positioning Volleyball New Zealand strongly for the future.
