The Volley Blacks have opened their Oceania Qualifiers campaign with a 3–1 win over Samoa in their opening match.
Samoa applied early defensive pressure, particularly through their blocking, which challenged New Zealand at the net. Despite this, New Zealand’s offensive strength proved decisive across the match.
Set results:
Set 1: New Zealand won 25–17
Set 2: Samoa won 31–29
Set 3: New Zealand won 25–15
Set 4: New Zealand won 25–21
New Zealand controlled the opening set before edging a tightly contested second set. Samoa responded in set three, applying pressure to take the set 25–15. The Volley Blacks regrouped in the fourth set, closing out the match 25–21.
The match featured several new and returning faces in the Volley Blacks lineup. Jack McManaway returned to the indoor court after competing on the beach circuit, while Saxon Gough, who stood out at the 2025 Club Championships, made his debut in the middle.
Luke and Troy Hulston were also back on court together for an international fixture.
Seth Grant continued to build on his international performances from earlier this year in Bahrain, following an MVP performance at the 2025 Club Championships. Mana Placid was a consistent offensive presence on the outside.
The Volley Blacks will now prepare to face the Volley Roos tomorrow night in their next match of the Oceania Qualifiers.
