Volleyball New Zealand recently conducted our community feedback survey... Have your Say. The feedback from this survey is an integral part of how we collectively can evolve our Regional and National systems. Below are the key themes from the Survey.
Leadership Qualities
Volleyball leaders need to embody transparency, integrity, and a commitment to inclusivity and diversity. They should have strong communication skills, be approachable, and lead with passion and vision. Leaders must prioritize development, uphold ethical standards, and act professionally in all decisions, while remaining accountable to the community.
Strategic Planning and Vision
The future of volleyball requires visionary leadership with a clear, long-term strategy. Setting achievable goals, making data-driven decisions, and adapting to change are essential for success. A well-communicated, inclusive strategy ensures alignment from the grassroots to the national level.
Community Engagement and Connection
Strong relationships within the volleyball community are vital. Leaders should engage regularly with all stakeholders—players, coaches, officials, and volunteers—by being visible and fostering open, two-way communication. Creating safe spaces for feedback and collaboration will strengthen the sense of community.
Inclusivity and Diversity
Inclusivity in all aspects of the sport is crucial. Volleyball leaders must ensure diverse representation in ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Special focus should be on supporting underrepresented groups and making sure all players feel valued and included.
Sustainability and Resource Management
Sustainable growth depends on responsible management of financial and operational resources. Volleyball organizations should focus on securing long-term revenue streams, such as through sponsorships, and reinvesting funds to support community-led development and infrastructure projects.
Communication and Transparency
Clear, consistent communication is key to building trust. Volleyball New Zealand (VNZ) must use multiple channels, including social media, newsletters, and a well-maintained website, to keep the community informed about events, decisions, and opportunities. Transparent selection and decision-making processes are essential.
Development Pathways
Focusing on player, coach, and official development at every level is necessary for volleyball's growth. By offering more training, opportunities, and support, the sport can ensure progression from grassroots to elite levels. This includes volunteer engagement and recognition, which are foundational to community-driven growth.
Innovation and Technology
To thrive, volleyball must embrace innovative ideas and technology. Expanding the use of live-streaming, social media, and online resources will help increase visibility and accessibility. Investing in new ideas, like centralized information hubs and digital communication tools, will improve engagement and participation.
High-Performance and Competition
Establishing robust pathways for high-performance athletes and hosting more national and regional competitions are essential. Introducing a National League, enhancing high-performance training hubs, and building new facilities will foster growth and elevate the sport’s competitive level.
Recognition and Wellbeing
Recognizing the contributions of all members—players, coaches, officials, and volunteers—is critical. VNZ must create a positive, supportive environment focused on the wellbeing of the community. Celebrating achievements and ensuring a fulfilling experience for all will strengthen the sport's culture.
