On behalf of the Volleyball New Zealand (VNZ) Board, I am pleased to announce that Debbie Hyland (Te Atihaunui-a-Pāpārangi te iwi, MInstD, FCCA, BCom) has been appointed as acting managing director (acting MD) until a permanent chief executive is appointed.
During this period, Debbie will continue as a member of the VNZ Board, reporting directly to the Board, while temporarily stepping away from her role as chair of finance, risk, and audit.
Debbie will transition into the acting MD role, effective from 13th March 2025, working closely with Steven Upfold as he prepares to depart VNZ on 19th March 2025. Having served on the VNZ Board and chaired the Finance, Risk, and Audit Committee, Debbie brings valuable insight into VNZ’s operations and strategic priorities. Her leadership experience across both the public and private sectors will ensure a strong focus on key priorities during this transition. I have full confidence in Debbie’s ability to guide VNZ through this period, ensuring continuity in core operations while advancing strategic projects.
In the coming days, Debbie will share more details about the transition plan and how regional associations and key stakeholders can be involved. The Board will support her where needed, with Crispin Phelan and Richard Casutt providing contracted assistance on key projects.
The VNZ Board has also begun the recruitment process for a permanent chief executive. We anticipate this will take 3–6 months.
