What is Legacy Volley?
Legacy Volley is a holistic volleyball programme using the power of volleyball to connect and educate young people on and off the court, supporting a safe and inclusive transition from school to club volleyball.
How did Legacy Volley begin?
In 2021-2022 Volleyball New Zealand partnered with Waitakere Rebels Volleyball Club Leaders to pilot the Brothers Play Programme supported from the Sport New Zealand Strengthen and Adapt project. The success of Brothers Play meeting the needs of the young tāne, increasing their confidence and competence in a safe, fun and inclusive environment and has evolved to include to now include young wāhine who showed interest in engaging also.
Who is involved in Legacy Volley?
Over 50 rangatahi players aged from 14-24 from west Auckland and right across Tāmaki Makaurau are involved in the Legacy Volley programme
Where does Legacy Volley operate?
Legacy Volley is delivered by the Waitakere Rebels Volleyball Club in West Auckland with multiple venues used for the programme.
What other things are part of the programme?
The programme also connects participants to a range of community services with the aim of educating. Players have gained Drivers Licenses via the programme involvement and also been linked with the NZ Police career pathway. Waitakere Rebels believe in learning through connection and experience, participants are provided a range of opportunities to engage with role models from different industries who share their journey.
