MACDONALD'S HOT FORM CONTINUES AS BEACH VOLLEYBALL SEASON BREAKS FOR CHRISTMAS - DECEMBER 21, 2020

Three weeks, three partners, three wins for Olivia MacDonald.

The New Zealand Beach Ferns volleyballer has won her third title in as many weeks, teaming up with Commonwealth Games rep Shaunna Polley to win the Mauao Open presented by 2wel.

MacDonald and Polley have beaten Alice Zeimann and Julia Tilley 21-12, 21-13 in the final at Mt Maunganui, in what was the last VNZ Beach Series three star event of the year.

It means MacDonald has won the last three tournaments with three different partners; taking out the Karapiro Open last week with Zeimann and the Mairangi Bay Open with Francesca Kirwan a fortnight ago.

MacDonald says the New Zealand players are mixing up their teams all season long. “What your partner didn’t do so well last week you try to exploit the following tournament, so while we all love each other it’s very tactical, " she says.

Perry Preston and Thomas Reid have beaten Brad Fullerton and Griffin Muller 21-19, 21-17 to take the men’s title, the third different combination to win one of the four three star events so far this season.

The players will now enjoy a short Christmas break before the GJ Gardner Homes NZ Beach Tour starts in early January.

The GJ Gardner Homes NZ Beach Tour begins in Nelson on January 9-10, with the national champs to be held at Ruakaka on the 23rd and 24th of January.

2020 BEACH VOLLEYBALL THREE STAR SERIES SET FOR INTRIGUING FINALE FOLLOWING KARAPIRO OPEN - December 14, 2020

Olivia MacDonald and Alice Zeimann have upset the number one pair of Shaunna Polley and Julia Tilley to win the Karapiro Open VNZ three star beach volleyball tournament.

MacDonald and Zeimann have beaten Polley and Tilley 21-18, 21-16 in the final. It sees MacDonald earn her second title in as many weeks after teaming up with Francesca Kirwan to win at Mairangi Bay last week.

Likewise, after his win with Tom Hartles last week, Alani Nicklin has also doubled up. Playing on the sand together for the first time, Nicklin and Johann Timmer have beaten David Jeffery and Perry Preston 2-nil (21-16, 21-17) in the decider.

It sets up an intriguing and exciting final pre-Christmas tournament at Mt. Maunganui, as the players head to the Mauao Open this weekend (Dec. 19-20).

Like the Karapiro Open, the semis and finals will be live streamed on the Sky Sport Next You Tube channel.

The VNZ three star Beach Series events are two day tournaments which provide a stepping stone and build up to the NZ Beach Tour four and five star competition.

The GJ Gardner Homes NZ Beach Tour begins in Nelson on January 9-10, with the national champs to be held at Ruakaka on the 23rd and 24th of January.

TOP BEACH VOLLEYBALL TEAMS HIT EARLY SEASON FORM - December 7, 2020

Defending national champions Tom Hartles and Alani Nicklin have continued their strong start to the beach volleyball season, winning their second consecutive three star VNZ Beach Series event.

After winning in Southland two weeks ago, Hartles and Nicklin have taken the title on home sand at the Mairangi Bay Open by beating Jack McManaway and Bae Fountain 2-0 (21-16, 21-15) in the final.

2019 women’s national champions Olivia MacDonald and Francesca Kirwan beat Alice Zeimann and Anilise Fitzi in a hard fought final 2-1 (24-22, 15-21, 15-12).

MacDonald says given it was their first tournament of the season together it’s a promising start.

“The first few tournaments are often rough, getting sand fit again and used to other teams, so it was good to be able to find holes in our game and problem solve,” she says.

The VNZ three star series moves to Karapiro this weekend (Dec 12-13) with the semi-finals and finals to be live streamed on SKY Sport Next You Tube Channel. The pre-Christmas events finish with the Mauao Open at Mt. Maunganui on December 19-20.

The semi-finals and finals of the Karapiro Open will be live streamed on SKY Sport Next You Tube Channel.

Three star events are two day tournaments which provide a stepping stone and build up to the NZ Beach Tour four and five star competition.

The GJ Gardner Homes NZ Beach Tour begins in Nelson on January 9-10, with the national champs to be held at Ruakaka on the 23rd and 24th of January.
