Continental Cup Press Release
One of the most important Beach Volleyball events to grace New Zealand shores will be played in Mount Maunganui on March 10th-12th 2020 directly following the G.J. Gardner Homes NZ Beach Tour Finals being played at the same location, March 7th-8th.
The AVC Beach Volleyball Continental Cup presented by G.J. Gardner Homes NZ will bring some of Oceania’s best beach athletes together to compete in the Oceania phase of the Asian Continental Olympic Qualifier for the Tokyo Olympics. New Zealand will be represented by two teams in each gender to be named shortly.
Volleyball New Zealand Chief Executive Toni-Maree Carnie says “while the hosting of Continental Cup was an unexpected Christmas present confirmed on Christmas Eve due to the measles outbreak in Fiji, Volleyball New Zealand and its partners are well on their way to presenting a quality event with New Zealand’s best beach athletes representing their country”.
Lined up to take part with New Zealand are Australia, Vanuatu, Samoa, Tuvalu and the Solomon Islands. Each country must provide 2 teams per gender and play a country v country format and if the tie is drawn 1-1 then a Golden Match is played. It's single elimination with Quarter Finals on Tuesday, Semi Finals Wednesday, and Finals on Thursday. (The Finals will be Live Streamed on SKY Sports Next from 1pm).
The winners of this event will go directly into the June Asian Continental Finals while the 2nd placed teams will face a second chance to get into the June Finals. The winners of the June Finals will then qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.
“Backing onto the G.J. Gardner Homes NZ Beach Tour Finals will give us 5 days of intense International Beach Volleyball competition”, says Tournament Director and Beachedaz Director Dave Miller. “Plans are well underway to create a stadium feel arena with a grandstand, International DJ, Commentator, and VIP hospitality. Alongside the 2 Beach Volleyball Tournaments will be New Zealand’s first 'Living Well Village' showcasing the holistically healthy beach volleyball lifestyle with demonstrations, talks, sampling, classes, and exhibits across a wide range of healthy living topics”. The week long festival of beach events will be known as Beach Life with plans to become an annual event.
Volleyball New Zealand would like to thank G.J. Gardner Homes, TECT, Tauranga City Council, Pub Charity and Oceania Volleyball for their fantastic support of the event.
