Continental Cup Finals Day

The final day of play at the AVC Continental Cup Oceania Zone Tournament was played in stunning conditions at Mt Maunganui, although in the matches played later in the day, the players had to cope with an increasing breeze.

In the Men's, Samoa took third place after a golden set win over Fiji, whilst in the Bronze medal playoff in the Women's, the New Zealand combinations proved too strong for the Samoan women.

The women's gold medal match saw the up and coming Vanuatu combinations against the vastly more experienced Austrlaian pairs.  In a stunning upset, the Vanuatu number 1 combination had a win over their much higher ranked Australian counterparts, but the Australians still took out the tie 3-1.

The much anticipated Trans-Tasman clash in the Men saw the Australian number 2 combination of Boehm/Kapa come out firing against the number 1 New Zealand combination Ben O'Dea/Pitman and some stunning blocks by Kapa had the kiwi's on the back foot and set the scene for the Australian's to take the tie 4-0.

Second Test Win to Chinese Side

in

The second match in the four-test series was a close fought encounter in Hamilton last night.

Whilst the New Zealand Men were always in the game, they were but not quite consistent enough to close out the sets.  This was the message the NZ Men's team took from their 3-0 loss to Sichuan last night in Hamilton.

In front of an excellent 630-strong crowd, comprising roughly even numbers of Chinese and New Zealand supporters, the NZ men were in every set, none more so than the 2nd, in which they held 4 set points before mistakes gave the set to their Chinese opponents.

The final result: Sichuan beat New Zealand 25-22, 29-27, 25-22

With the series underway, the New Zealand squad have more time together and look forward to continuing to improve with the goal to even the series in the matches in North Harbour on Saturday and the final test at ASB Stadium in Auckland at 2.00pm on Sunday 24th July.
