The new look New Zealand Senior Women’s team depart today to compete in the third and final World Qualifying Tournament being held in Chia Yi City, Chinese Taipei from 28-30 August 2009. This is the pinnacle event for two teams to qualify for the finals of the 2010 FIVB Women’s Volleyball Championship to be held in Japan.

New Zealand, currently ranked 84th in the world, will meet strong competition as they play in a round robin format against Kazakhstan [14], Chinese Taipei [21] and Korea with the highest world ranking among the teams at 10th.

A combination of past and current NZL representatives and new players to this level of the game are “ready and enthusiastic” says Captain Debbie Hill, and looking forward to the opportunity to play against three of the highest ranked Asian teams. It is suggested only that “New Zealand has an outside shot at advancing, and will likely be happy with gaining valuable international experience while probably not seriously troubling the other three teams.”

Unfortunately short notice of the timing of this event from the International Federation (FIVB) conflicted with Volleyball New Zealand’s premier event VNZ Club Nationals Volleyball Championships which also commenced today in Christchurch, without the NZL team.
