NZIS Wellington Women and South Auckland Men win 40th NZ Volleyball Club Championship

The top volleyball players from around New Zealand started play in Palmerston North on Wednesday competing in the 40th Volleyball New Zealand Club Championship.

NZIS Wellington won the women’s NZ Club Volleyball Championship with a thrilling five set win over Waitakere of Auckland. Both teams had never won the title previously, and it was NZIS whom triumphed with a 3-2 (22-25, 25-23, 25-18, 17-25, 15-9) in 103 minutes.

Standouts for NZIS included the blocking of their captain Rebecca Toomaga whom scored several points at the net, and well as the dynamic libero Miki Kitora, whose defensive play really set the crowd alight. For Waitakere, Jo Waller was consistent and exact in backcourt, while Simon Turner was able to land some powerful spikes.

NZIS ran away with the 5th set on with some excellent defensive teamwork and aggressive spiking from Teina Boyd and Peri Stenhouse to win their 1st NZ Title.

South Auckland men won their 4th National title with a convincing 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-19, 25-20) victory over North Harbour. South Auckland started the match well and took the 1st set. North Harbour rallied on the back of some great defensive work to steal the 2nd set 25-22.

Then South Auckland took charge with some outstanding blocking from Benetti Schwalger, and spectacular spiking from Faaetete Sua and Kevin Kelsall. In the end South Auckland were to powerful at the net, and were able to secure their victory with two convincing wins in the 3rd and 4th sets.

National Club Championships Photos online!!!

NZ Club Championships 2006

Craig Phillips, one of our International Indoor Referees has taken a series of photos from NZ Club Championships, as well as some zone competitions.

All images are available for purchase.  Profits from the sale of these images are to go to a special travel fund for Junior Volleyball. How it will work is Craig Phillips will collect payments and pay for the development and distribution of the photos, and ALL profit will be passed to VNZ for this travel fund. This is a voluntary service being provided by Craig.

Photographs online at http://www.flickr.com/photos/craig_phillips/sets/

The fund is to be administered under a deed of trust, which means that the funds generated can only be used to help Junior Volleyball teams participate in higher levels of competition. We hope that we can continue this enterprise with images from future volleyball events.

All images from Nationals are uploaded now. The images viewed on screen are at a low resolution which means that the quality of a print image is actually a lot higher.

In coming weeks, photographs from zone tournaments and other volleyball events will also be uploaded.

If you are not satisfied with the quality of any image you purchase, you can return it for a full refund for that image. You will need to be in touch with Craig Phillips for that.
