High Performance - Beach Volleyball
Beach Volleyball is the current strength of High Performance in Volleyball in New Zealand. New Zealand's number one team, Kirk Pitman and Jason Lochhead, are currently ranked 26th in the world. Following in their footsteps are a number of young men and women performing with credit on the world stage, and promising to improve as they progress through further development opportunities including our own National Tour and ventures to Asian events.
Supported with funding from SPARC, Mike Dudson (Bay of Plenty), in his role as HP Elite Beach Manager guides our talented athlete programme alongside assisting Kirk and Jason with their programme management.
In 2010, an additional pathway to the Olympics was determined by FIVB, creating opportunities for smaller nations to qualify to compete through continental tournaments, alongside the World Tour qualification process. Pitman/Lochhead will continue to compete and seek to qualify through the World Tour, while New Zealand will also enter the olympic campaign through the Oceania Sub-zonal and Zonal events which commenced in May 2011 in Samoa. Four teams, two of each gender, will compete in a teams qualifying competition at this level, with the top 2 teams of each gender moving through to the Zone event. The Zone event winner will qualify to play in the Asian Continental Cup.
The Junior Coaching staff are Anthony Joe (Taranaki) Under 21/19 Men; Darrell Boyd (Bay of Plenty) Under 17 Boys; Tim Cleaver (Bay of Plenty) Under 21 Women; Fiona Scrimshaw (North Harbour) Under 19 Women and Under 17 Girls.
