Bill Turnbull

2011 Life Member

Bill Turnbull has been involved with volleyball in New Zealand at all levels. For many years he was an extremely successful school coach at Kings High School and then transferred to St Paul’s High School which later became Kavanagh College. All these school teams frequently gained medal placings at National Championships. Bill was also instrumental in developing the local school competition and it would be fair to say that the majority of school coaches in Dunedin have at some stage benefitted from Bill’s guidance. He has been extremely generous in the time he devoted to schools volleyball.
Bill has been instrumental in ensuring that the new school gymnasiums built in Dunedin over recent years are volleyball compatible and friendly. When Bill moved from teaching to take over Unipol Recreation and later Recreation Services for Otago University, his commitment to Volleyball never wavered.
Bill was a foundation member of the Scorpion Volleyball Club in the 1970’s. From that time and because of Bill’s energy the Club has grown in strength and status. He has been a formidable stalwart of the club ensuring the players have access to resources and support necessary to compete at the highest level. The sound basis of the Club is almost entirely due to Bill’s careful management of finances. Bill was responsible both directly and indirectly in coaching both the Scorpion Men’s and Women’s teams.
Bill served on the Management Committee of Volleyball NZ in the 1980’s and as Vice President 1989-91 and in 1995. Bill coached the NZ Universities team which travelling to Japan for World University Games.
At all levels of the game, we recognise Bill’s contribution through his determined and persistent approach to the issues confronting the Volleyball community in NZ. It has been said that one cannot have a volleyball conversation with Bill Turnbull, without being overwhelmed by his passion and commitment to volleyball.
Bill’s impact on and devotion to the game of volleyball in New Zealand spans more than 30 years.

Shelley Addison

2011   Life Member

Shelley has made an outstanding contribution to volleyball over a period not much short of 40 years.
Throughout this time she has been involved in every aspect of the sport; playing competitively for 22 consecutive years, coaching managing and refereeing for over 19 years, as an administrator for the last 28 years
As a player, Shelley competed on the International Volleyball scene for 15 years from 1978 to 1993, accumulating a total of 54 caps for the NZ Senior team, and captaining the team in 15 of these games. Shelley has coached various New Zealand teams since 1990 as assistant coach of the NZ Junior Women and from 2000 as coach of the Senior Women’s Coach retiring in 2011.
Shelley was quick to become involved when beach volleyball was added to the national and international scene both as a competitor, managing men’s and women’s teams on the World Tour and in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta as Manager to the Hamilton brothers in New Zealand’s first and only representation in beach volleyball at the Olympics.
Between 1991 -2005, Shelley involved herself in many aspects of the administration of the game – at Club, Association and national levels – as a Committee member, Commission member, Board member and in the Vice Presidency role of VNZ.
In summary, Shelley has had a passion for the sport of volleyball. She had a very distinguished playing career on the national and international scene and through her desire to encourage others to take up the sport and to promote the sport to all, Shelley continues her involvement in volleyball.

Jenny Kirk

2011 Life Member

Jenny’s contribution to volleyball spans more than three decades. First appearing in the National U18 team in 1974, Jenny went on to represent New Zealand in the national senior team six years later.
Jenny’s significant contribution to local volleyball was recognised with the awarding of Life Membership to her Tauranga Volleyball Club as early as 1986.
Her service to local, regional and national volleyball is significant; as an athlete – representing school, region and New Zealand at the highest levels; as a local administrator – responsible for the establishment of quality competitions and tournaments in Tauranga; as a long time Board member of the Tauranga Volleyball Club and Volleyball Bay of Plenty; as a coach and manager of school, club, regional and NZ representative teams and possibly her most recognised contribution is as a national team manager with the Junior Women’s team for almost two decades. This is maybe where her passion for the game has impacted most. Jenny has consistently delivered value-added international experiences to her charges. Working in synch with Coach Stewart Henderson, Jenny has provided professional, sometimes formidable and always remarkable programmes for the athletes selected to represent New Zealand.
Jenny’s love of the game and contribution to volleyball development will be remembered by many through the enormous part she played in the development of Kiwi Volley, and a consequent Coaching Manual used by many throughout New Zealand.
Jenny has affected and impacted on the volleyball lives and careers of many.

Stewart Henderson

2011 Life Member

Stewart’s contribution to volleyball spans more than three decades. Stewart first appeared as a very new Coach for Otumoetai College teams at the annual Schools Nationals tournament in the 80’s. From here Stewart has made his mark in schools’ volleyball with his Otumoetai charges winning 12 National titles and 7 Junior Championship titles in his time at the helm and where silver and bronze medals were often the outcome of tournaments where the title escaped them.
Stewart’s significant contribution extended beyond the school teams to Tauranga Club teams where again he twice led his Women to victory at the VNZ National Club Championships – the most recent of which was in Napier last year.
Locally, Stewart has held the presidency role for the Tauranga Club for almost 16 years and continues in this role to ensure the Club grows in strength, and performs at the highest levels in competitions offered.
It is without doubt that Stewart will be most recognised for his contribution to the National Junior Women’s programme for almost two decades. Working in synch with his Manager Jenny Kirk, he has provided his athletes with consistent levels of high quality coaching, a caring learning environment and experiences that the athletes will remember for a lifetime. Fondly known as Stu, his passion for the game, his expectations for respecting and supporting each other at all times is clearly evident in the lifelong friendships made. For over 30 years, Stewart has influenced many athletes and contemporary coaches to always perform at the highest level of their ability, and for them all Stewart’s words of wisdom and his leading by example will be remembered for many years to come.
Stewart has affected and impacted on the volleyball lives and careers of many.

Craig Phillips

2011 Life Member

Craig’s contribution to volleyball in New Zealand has been outstanding, and has been consistent over a period of more than 30 years.
Craig has refereed to international levels throughout this time, trained and mentored hundreds of young aspiring Referees from entry to national levels. He has chaired numerous referee panels and provided wise counsel and guidance on many match play issues, returning agreed outcomes from often very intense situations.
Craig will be most recognised in the volleyball community for his volleyball refereeing expertise and ability. However, his contribution to the growth, development and high performance areas spreads well beyond the Referee Stand.
Craig has coached and managed teams to the national level, and travelled with New Zealand teams as the designated international referee to international championship events, the most recent being Taiwan and the 3rd round of the World Championships.
Craig’s name appears often in the aged minutes of the organisation – from the days of the Federation of Clubs through to this year’s AGM. He has represented as a delegate to annual meetings, and most recently, has twice served on the VNZ Board - on both occasions completing his term as Chair.

Roll of Honour (now deceased)

John Hall
  • 2011 Life Member
  • 2004 Service Award

Any attempt to describe John’s contribution to volleyball in New Zealand runs the risk of gross understatement. John has been involved in everything volleyball almost since its inception in New Zealand.

Our first records tell us that John was a key player in representative teams over a period of 12 years from 1970, and during the same period fulfilled administrative roles with the Federation of Clubs as a committee member Treasurer, and Committee chair.

From 1984-1989 John was Coach of the national Men’s team taking them to compete in Australia, Kuwait, New Caledonia, Asia and even Greece.

In standing for the Committee in 1989 John it is recorded that John stated that he “strongly believes that development must continue at all levels, both playing and administrative as each level supports the other”. This has been the essence of his commitment to volleyball over more than four decades.

John fulfilled his commitment as a player, a coach, committee member, Vice President, Referees convenor, kiwisport liaison, league convenor and Zone Convenor.

In 1991 Graeme Steel is quoted, ”we are deeply indebted to John hall for his continuous involvement with the men’s team, as a player and coach are unparalleled, his contribution to volleyball inestimable (and we hope not yet complete)”. Gladly this involvement has continued through to this day.
John is selfless in his commitment, driven by one motive – to share his knowledge and time to all who wish to be involved in the game he so loves. Volleyball has been his life.
